The government of the Caribbean nation said that Orlando Jorge Mera, Minister of Environment of the Dominican Republic, died after being shot in his office this Monday (6).

As a close friend of the victim, Cruz had no trouble getting into the ministry’s headquarters in Santo Domingo.

Police declined to comment on the incident. AFP personnel present at the scene saw a heavily armed group from the elite police unit enter the ministry.

“We are appalled by the situation presented at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources this Monday morning,” the ministry previously said on Twitter. After the incident, the building was evacuated by the authorities.
