Russian lawmakers approved a law Tuesday that authorizes Russia to stop implementing decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), following its expulsion from the Council of Europe in March.

President of the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, Viacheslav Volodin, said in a statement after the vote, “The European Court of Human Rights has turned into a tool against our country in the hands of Western politicians.”

According to Volodin, “Some of its decisions directly contradict the Russian Constitution, our values and traditions”.

According to this law, Russia will not implement the decisions taken by the ECHR as of March 15, when Moscow announced its decision to leave the Council of Europe, of which it has been a member since 1996.

The next day, Russia was formally removed from the Council for military intervention in Ukraine.

Russia also left the European Convention on Human Rights, leaving it, but will have to respect it until September 16, when it will cease to be a “High Contracting Party”.
