Five high school students and an adult woman were killed in Monday night’s shooting in the Mexican city of Salamanca, local authorities said on Tuesday.
“I am saddened to report that a few hours ago six people were killed in a gun attack in Barrón (north of Salamanca),” said the mayor, César Prieto.
According to local police, gunmen in the street opened fire on a group of students at a school, killing five people, two men and three women, aged 16 to 18 years.
The other victim, a 65-year-old woman, was walking in the area of this city in the central state of Guanajuato.
The tragedy came after eight women and three men were shot dead in an attack on two bars and a hotel in Celaya, also in Guanajuato, on 23 May.
A thriving industrial center through which a major pipeline network runs and a refinery operates, this state has become one of the most violent states in Mexico due to conflict between the Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels.
Cartels fight for control of drug trafficking and stolen fuel, among other crimes.
Since December 2006, when the government launched a controversial anti-drug operation, Mexico has recorded more than 340,000 murders and tens of thousands of missing persons, most of them attributable to the actions of criminal organizations.
