Havana, 7 June (EFE). – People’s Summit – a forum parallel to the 9th edition of the Summit of the Americas – said on Tuesday Cuban President Miguel Díaz “will be a true transcendent political event for our peoples”. – One day after Canel was removed from the regional leaders meeting in Los Angeles (USA) this week.
“Diverse political and social movements from Latin America and broad participation from different sectors in the United States will gather in Los Angeles, California to celebrate the People’s Summit,” the Cuban leader said on Twitter.
More than 150 organizations from the United States and Latin America will participate in this alternative event from tomorrow to June 10 against the absence of immigration and minority issues at the Americas Summit that started yesterday.
According to the event’s schedule, representatives of pro-government Cuban civil society will attend the alternative meeting, such as journalist Cristina Escobar, scholar Tania Crombet and musician Israel Rojas. But Cuban activist Saily González denounced her country’s authorities for not allowing her to travel to the United States to attend the Continental Civil Society Forum Summit, which concludes on Friday.
Despite criticism from many countries, the United States officially refused to invite representatives of the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela yesterday on the grounds that they did not meet democratic standards.
After being excluded, Havana accused Washington of maintaining an “discriminatory and unacceptable” and “undemocratic and arbitrary” stance.
