The United States government on Wednesday announced a new Health Unit of America in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to train 500,000 healthcare professionals in the region in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Health education will cost $100 million, and Washington will pay for some of it.
A government source, who did not want to be identified during a conference call, said this was primarily about “providing more advanced skills to existing health professionals (…) in research, service delivery and, to some extent, public health management”.
The Health Corps will function as a consortium and partner with academic institutions in the United States and the region to develop and expand the existing training programs of PAHO, the United States government and the World Health Organization’s regional office for the Americas. (WHO).
