Dozens of Russian ships are participating in military exercises in the Baltic Sea this Thursday (9) at a time of great tension in this strategic region where NATO is conducting maneuvers.
“As part of the exercise, tactical naval groups of the Baltic Fleet left their bases and moved to certain areas,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry, 60 ships and 40 aircraft and helicopters participate in maneuvers, which are also carried out on land at training centers in Kaliningrad.
On Tuesday, 20 Russian ships participated in the exercise in the same area.
Since Sunday, NATO has been conducting its own large-scale annual naval exercises called “Baltops 22” in the Baltic Sea, which will continue until 17 June.
Intense military activity takes place against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Moscow and Western countries since the beginning of the Russian military offensive on Ukraine at the end of February.
The strategic region of the Baltic Sea has been the focus of attention since Sweden and Finland announced their applications to join NATO last month, which Russia views as hostile to its interests.
