The United States government announced on Thursday it has an operational plan to deliver 10 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to infants and toddlers by June 20, if it receives approval from health regulators.
According to the White House memo, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will convene a Special Vaccine Advisory Committee on June 15 to decide whether Pfizer vaccines should be recommended and Moderna vaccines recommended for infants aged 6 months to 4 years (in three doses). For children from 6 months to 5 years (in two doses). This age group is the only one not vaccinated in the United States, as in many countries. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna alliance ensures that clinical tests are positive at this age.
The FDA may approve the plan if a positive opinion is received from this Committee. Then, a second committee of experts, convened this time by the organization that brings together the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will present its recommendation on June 18, and once final approval has been registered, launch the immunization campaign.
“As the FDA and CDC conduct their independent reviews, the (President Joe) Biden administration is preparing for all scenarios, including the start of vaccination from the week of June 20,” the White House said in a statement.
He added that after FDA approval, the government could immediately start distributing 10 million doses across the country, followed by “a million more.”
