US military officials confirmed on Thursday (9) that five sailors were killed in an accident involving a military plane in southern California.
“We mourn the loss of our Marines in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to their families and friends as they face this tragedy,” said Major General Bradford J. Gering of the Marine Corps 3rd Air Division.
The MV-22B Osprey aircraft crashed during a training mission Wednesday near Glamis, just 35 kilometers from the Mexican border.
According to the company, an investigation has already been launched to determine the causes of the accident.
The Osprey is a “vertical takeoff and landing” aircraft with propellers that can be arranged upward on its wings, making its mobility similar to that of a helicopter or forward like a conventional aircraft.
U.S. military forces have suffered a number of accidents with such aircraft, including an accident in Norway in March that killed four marines.
