jair Bolsonaro took his coup speech to the United States. If there is a certain expectation – never mine! – he said he would soften the conversation and reaffirm his commitment to democracy, quite the opposite. The words are meaningful, I’m respectful, and I stick to what they mean.
We don’t know how the private meeting with Joe Biden went. What the Brazilian president has said in public is extremely serious. There are signs everywhere that “Captain” intends to disrupt the game. Whether it will be successful is another story. The truth is that he decided to question his country’s electoral system in foreign lands and made him president – which is nonsense in itself.
Biden graciously greeted the host in his short opening speech, prioritizing democracy:
“Brazil is a wonderful place. Thanks to their vibrant, inclusive democracies and strong institutions, our nations are bound together by deep shared values.”
He also praised Brazil’s “good job” to protect the Amazon and called for “help the rest of the world fund conservation”. “We all benefit from it,” he stressed. Friendly. He spoke for a minute and a half.
Bolsonaro used six and a half minutes. He was reactive on the environmental issue, echoing the rant about Brazil being some kind of world conservation champion, and gasping at the blow. A trivial, careless reading might conclude that he himself has declared that he will be subject to the survey results. However, he said the opposite. This is the talk of someone who has thought about a way to turn things around and is. stated:
“There are elections in Brazil this year. And we want clean, reliable and auditable elections so that there is no doubt after the election. I’m sure it will be held in a democratic spirit. So will the government. democratically.”
It is actually a threat.
Who is the “we” in this speech? It doesn’t repeat the first words of the US Constitution: “We humans…” No. Magnificent is plural. It means “I want” and is a prerequisite for leaving power. In a speech to the press before meeting with Biden, he repeated the lie that the voting system in Brazil is uncontrollable.
So Bolsonaro went to the United States to announce that the election, as held here, was not in accordance with his wishes.
He betrays himself a little when he says “it’s here”. [ao poder] For democracy.” Now that the system is already in place, and as of 2018, new evidence has been built that it is safe and auditable, it can be concluded that Bolsonaro conceded that even if it were defeated, democracy would win.
It turns out that this makes sense. And the logic used with Bolsonaro will always be a waste of time.
Note the quote: “When he leaves government, it will be democratically”. His defeat will not be “democratic” and he will not relinquish power, as he claims that the system has been tampered with to ensure Lula’s victory and knows that he is lying.
The speech in the USA should be understood here in a series of final manifestations. At a ceremony at the Planalto Palace on Tuesday, he threatened:
“The Armed Forces presented hundreds of weaknesses [nas urnas eletrônica]and them [TSE] I do not like. You’re the one who invited us here, come on! I am the head of the Armed Forces. We will not make fools of ourselves. I have an obligation to act.”
Talking about “weaknesses” is a lie. What he said to Biden on Thursday therefore needs to be interpreted in the light of another statement he made on Tuesday: He will simply lead a successor. “if the selections are clear”. Since he has already decided that there will be no cleaning…
On Wednesday, he hurled insults at the Supreme Court at the Rio Trade Association and reaffirmed his willingness to disregard judicial decisions. Political guilt is such that one of his sons, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, called for coup rallies for September 7 in an interview with TV.
I’ve already written here about the green-yellow-trendy “Capitol environment” which is the scam pattern I have in mind. “His” people would go all or nothing, disorder would spread, the Armed Forces would be called to duty – according to the Constitution – and Bolsonaro would then present himself as “the supreme authority”. Flávio scheduled the phone call for September 7, but his father seems to be in a hurry.
There are clear signs that Bolsonaro does not intend to wait for defeat to create chaos. And I was less sure of that before the US speech. Everything would go wrong for him. But the country would pay an incalculable price.
Here is the answer to those who voted for Bolsonaro in 2018—to prevent a PT from winning—in the hope that he would allow himself to be replaced by democratic institutions.
Besides being non-existent, it also corrupted and perverted institutionalism itself.
