A senior US government official said the US will stop pre-boarding Covid-19 testing for passengers flying into the country from 12:01pm on Sunday, following strong pressure from airlines and the travel industry.

President Joe Biden’s administration will announce later this Friday that it will no longer require pre-departure Covid-19 testing for travelers to the United States, after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determines it based on science. and data that this requirement is no longer necessary. The CDC will review this decision within 90 days, he said.

Since December, the CDC has required passengers to test negative for Covid-19 within one day of flights to the United States, but not for land border crossings.

“If there is a need to reinstate a pre-takeoff test requirement, including because of a new variant, the CDC will not hesitate to take action,” he said.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said at a conference last week that the testing requirements are “pointless” and affect both leisure and business travel.

The airline said it did not travel internationally because of concerns that many Americans would test positive and be stranded abroad.

Isom said that 75% of the countries Americans visit do not have testing requirements.

In December, the CDC tightened its requirements for international air travelers to receive a negative Covid test one day before their flight, rather than three days before their arrival in the US.
