Kyiv (Reuters) – Russian forces cut off a possible escape route for civilians by blowing up a bridge connecting the Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk to a city across the river, local officials said on Sunday.
Sievierodonetsk has become the epicenter of the battle for control of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and has seen parts destroyed in the bloodiest fighting since the Kremlin launched its invasion on February 24.
Luhansk provincial governor Serhiy Gaidai said Ukrainian and Russian forces were still fighting in the streets on Sunday.
Russian forces have captured most of the city, but Ukrainian troops control an industrial area and a chemical plant housing hundreds of civilians.
Gaidai said the Russians destroyed a bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River that connects Sivierodonetsk with its sister city, Lysychansk.
This leaves only one of the three bridges standing and reduces the choice of route that can be used to evacuate civilians or move Ukrainian troops to positions west of the river.
