Pressured by the international community against deforestation, violence against indigenous people and denial rhetoric, the Brazilian government announced at the WTO (World Trade Organization) conference that it would adhere to a declaration on sustainability and trade.
The announcement was made this Friday by Itamaraty’s general secretary, ambassador Fernando Simas Magalhães, on the first day of the institution’s summit. According to him, the government will participate in these negotiations.
In fact, the group has 72 countries, and Brazil was unofficially already part of the initiative. From now on, the government is fully committed.
The bloc was first announced in November 2020 and its purpose was to intensify the discussion at the WTO about the relationship between trade and environmental sustainability. The goal was to implement “structured discussions” on the topic.
Officially called Structured Debates on Trade and Environmental Sustainability (TESSD), the company still deals with environmental products and promotes the idea of ”a global trading system that protects and preserves the environment in line with sustainable development”.
The group also discusses the circular economy and sustainable supply chains.
Since last year, the Brazilian government has changed the way it deals with international pressure due to the environment. In November, at the UN Climate Conference, Brazil made different commitments to reduce deforestation. A week ago, at the Summit of the Americas, this issue was once again pointed out. Even in the OECD, the country has adopted a package of negotiations that includes ambitious environmental measures.
But international suspicion refers to the credibility of Jair Bolsonaro’s government in actually implementing the commitments made.
