The main purpose of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine is to protect the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, the Kremlin said Monday, after the leader of one of the separatist regions requested additional forces from Moscow.
Denis Pushilin, leader of Ukraine’s separatist Russian-backed Donetsk region, said there was more fighting and bombing in the region on Monday.
“All necessary forces, including the forces of the Russian Federation, including the Allies, will be involved to counter the enemy,” said Pushilin.
“In general, the protection of republics is the main goal of the special military operation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Russian state news agency RIA.
Reuters was unable to independently verify Russia’s allegations of massive bombings in the Donetsk region, and there was no immediate response from Kiev on the matter.
Donetsk and Luhansk are two Russian-backed separatist formations in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, which Russia says is fighting to get out of Kiev’s control completely.
