“The terrain is a very steep, challenging area,” Alison Hesterly of Cal Fire San Bernardino told the Los Angeles Times.

About 200 firefighters, including from the air, are responding to the fire.

“They (…) are mainly focused on the northwest and extreme south (…) edges and hope that the wind doesn’t push the fire out of the containment lines,” Hesterly said.

The fire started Saturday amid temperatures reaching 43 degrees Celsius in Palm Springs and extreme heatwaves sweeping parts of California and the west, reaching its highest level on record.

The Southwest has been hit by a unique drought that has left the vegetation extremely dry and combustible.
