Russia announced today that it will open a humanitarian corridor for the exit of civilians hiding in the Nitrogen chemical industry area in Severodonetsk in the Lugansk region, Tass news agency reported.
And Moscow once again “invited” the army present there to lay down their arms and let the civilians go. Noting that people will be taken to Svatovo in Lugansk, the Ministry of Defense said, “The humanitarian corridor will operate from 8 am to 20 pm local time.”
The Ukrainian government has not confirmed the information so far.
On Tuesday, the head of the city’s military-civil administration, Oleksandr Stryuk, said there were about “540 to 560 civilians” who took shelter in air raid shelters from constant attacks by the Russians. The message was published on Telegram and forwarded by the newspaper “Ukrainska Pravda”, and the representative also noted that there are constant attempts to invade by land and “intense struggle”.
The situation in Azot risks repeating what was seen at the Azovstal steel complex in Mariupol, which turned out to be the last Ukrainian bunker.
Severodonetsk is one of the main cities in the Lugansk region, which, like the neighboring Donetsk province, is part of the Donbass region. Pro-Russian groups have been fighting for independence with Kyiv since 2014 and have always relied on Moscow for weapons supplies and military training.
Despite the time of conflict, these organizations did not control all the territory of the two currently disputed provinces. The conquest of Donbass in May became the main focus of the war, which Russia launched on February 24 after the failed attempt to take the capital, Kiev.
