The Kremlin announced today that they do not want the British authorities to intervene from Russia on behalf of two Britons who were sentenced to death by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine and fought with soldiers in Kiev.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said British authorities had not “considered” Russia and said the Russian side would “be willing to listen”, but London would also have to appeal to the separatist authorities responsible for the conviction.
“You will have to go to the authorities of the country whose court gave the sentence, and this is not Russia,” said Peskov.
Brits Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner and Moroccan Brahim Saadun were sentenced to death last week by separatist authorities in Donetsk (eastern Ukraine), accused of engaging in mercenary service.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss described the decision as “an illegitimate puppet trial”, while British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said she was “appalled” by the sentence.
