Britain’s first flight of asylum seekers to Rwanda failed to take off as scheduled on Tuesday after a European human rights court ordered injunctions to prevent the deportation of some migrants.

The British government’s plan to send some immigrants to the East African country was criticized by dissidents, charities and religious leaders who said it was inhumane, and faced a series of legal challenges in London courts to stop it from happening.

At least 30 people scheduled to depart on the first plane in recent days argued that they should not be deported to Rwanda for health or human rights reasons, and they succeeded.

Only a few migrants were due to fly from an air force base in southwest England on Tuesday, but shortly before the plane took off, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ordered an injunction to halt their deportation.

“I have always said that this policy will not be easy to implement, and I am disappointed that legal difficulties and last-minute allegations prevented today’s flight from taking off,” Home Minister Priti Patel said. Said.

“Despite repeated successes in our domestic courts, the intervention of the European Court of Human Rights is astonishing.”

He said the government will not be deterred and will prepare for the next flight.
