John Hinckley, who attempted to assassinate former US President Ronald Reagan in 1981, was fully liberated Wednesday, six years after leaving a mental institution.

In early June, a Washington court ruled that Hinckley, now 67 after decades of psychiatric treatment and examination, is no longer a threat and that the conditions imposed on him after his release will be lifted on June 15.

“After 41 years, two months and 15 days, I’m free!!!” Hinckey said on Wednesday. he tweeted.

Hinckley shot Reagan and three others with a pistol outside a Washington hotel on March 30, 1981, claiming he did it because he wanted to impress actress Jodie Foster, whom he became obsessed with after watching the movie “Taxi Driver: Taxi Driver”.

Although Reagan’s press secretary, James Brady, was partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, all four victims of the attack survived.

In the 1982 trial, Hinckley was found not guilty on account of his psychological condition and was sent to St. Elizabeths is a Washington psychiatric institution where she spent 34 years.

He was released in September 2016, but was forced to live with his elderly mother in a safe community in Williamsburg, Virginia, under a long list of restrictions, including monitoring his movements, electronic devices, and online accounts.

He is also prohibited from contacting Foster or traveling to any territory where a current or former president, vice president or member of Congress may be present.

Hinckley also could not speak to the media, post his memoirs online, or display them in person without permission.

A government report on Hinckley, submitted to the court on May 19, said his mental state “remained stable” and that his psychiatric illness had been “in complete and sustained remission for decades”.

He “did not report or exhibit any psychiatric symptoms consistent with mood swings, anxiety, or psychotic disorder,” according to the report.

In recent years, Hinckley has undergone music therapy, starting to play the guitar and sing folk songs on YouTube and other music sites.

He announced that he will be releasing an album of his songs in December.
