While most of the restaurants that opened on Sunday are under new brands and owners, the Big Mac sandwich continues to be sold in some locations where McDonald’s franchises operate in Russia.
McDonald’s sold most of its 850 restaurants in Russia to one of its local licensees in May. Some reopened on Sunday under the new name Vkusno & tochka, or “Tasty and that’s it”, and introduced a new menu without the iconic sandwich.
But other franchises have kept their businesses open and almost visibly selling authentic McDonald’s meals at McDonald’s branded restaurants.
The permanent presence of fast food outlets underlines the difficulties that Western companies will face in completely removing themselves from the Russian market due to Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.
Moscow and St. Petersburg train stations, the McDonald’s name and logo were covered in transparent white fabric, and the Big Mac burger was available, although it was renamed Bolshoi Burger or Big Burger.
