Former captain and goalkeeper of Paraguay national team José Luis Chilavert announced this Thursday (16) that he will run for president of his country in the 2023 elections.

Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup champion Chilavert with Argentina’s Vélez Sarsfield announced on his social networks that he decided to apply after “thinking and feeling the responsibility of building a better Paraguay”.

The former player has repeatedly expressed his desire to follow in the footsteps of former Milan, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain striker George Weah, who is president of Liberia.

The former goalkeeper said, “We need a country that respects us so that they respect us and the capitalists come here to invest. There is no time to look back. There is no time to lose.”

Elections in Paraguay are scheduled for April 30, 2023.

Famous for being a goalkeeper with a strong personality and scoring several goals from free kicks and penalties, Chilavert also played for Strasbourg, France.
