Russian Ambassador to the European Union (EU) Vladimir Chizhov said on Thursday he hopes Ukraine will receive candidate status for EU bloc membership tomorrow.
Diplomat, St. In his speech at the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, he said, “If nothing extraordinary happens tomorrow, the European Commission will make a positive recommendation. Then the matter will be in the hands of the member states.”
Russia, which previously only opposed Ukraine’s accession to NATO, now admits that it may oppose EU membership as well.
Moscow accused several countries that were part of the community bloc of supplying Kyiv troops with heavy weapons in order to resist and defeat the Russian forces.
“As far as our relationships are concerned, they’re at their lowest point throughout history, not just since I took office. Of course, we haven’t closed the door for good,” Chizhov said.
The ambassador also believes that the European Commission will not shut itself down to Russia as it is the bloc’s largest trading partner.
Thus, Chizhov predicted that Europe would become “the last corner of world development” if the EU did not reconsider its position on the largest of the former Soviet republics, and if both failed to find new ground for cooperation.
Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with the leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Romania and assured that the path chosen by the country of which he headed was the European Union.
