Chinese President Xi Jinping will lead the virtual summit of the leaders of the BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa, next week. This will be the group’s first meeting since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine.
Created in 2009, this influential group of emerging economies makes up 40% of the global population and represents almost 25% of world GDP.
State news agency Xinhua reported on Friday that Xi will chair the virtual BRICS meeting on June 23, citing Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Three of its members – China, India and South Africa – declined to vote on a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
China and India have strong military ties to Russia and buy significant amounts of oil and gas.
In a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Wednesday, Xi voiced his support for “sovereignty and security” issues, urging the United States to urge Beijing to avoid placing itself on the “wrong side of history”.
