Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who spearheaded the election race, this Friday (17) criticized the UK’s decision to extradite Australian journalist and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

“Today they have decided to extradite Assange to the United States. And if he is extradited, he will certainly die in life imprisonment and imprisonment. And we who speak of democracy here need to ask: What crime did Assange commit,” he wrote in a Twitter post.

The PT stressed that Assange committed “the crime of telling the truth through the US investigative department by showing I don’t know if the CIA is listening to many countries around the world, including President Dilma Rousseff.”

According to Lula, he “condemned the fraud and espionage carried out by the most important country on the planet.”

“The United States apologized to Angela Merkel, but not to Brazil.

If someone has committed a crime, it is the person who spies on other countries on behalf of the United States. Including spying on Petrobras,” he added.

Assange is accused of leaking classified US documents relating to war crimes committed by national forces in the wars in Iran and Afghanistan.

He is also accused of “conspiring” with former analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain classified documents. He would face up to 175 years in prison if convicted of all crimes.

After a lengthy court battle, British Home Secretary Priti Patel approved Australia’s extradition today, claiming that the country’s courts “do not view the return as oppressive, unfair or abuse of process”. However, his defense may appeal the decision.
