President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this Friday (17) that Ukraine will start requiring visas from Russian citizens from 1 July.
The measure comes nearly four months after the start of the Moscow-backed invasion and will end the free-access regime for Russians that began with Ukraine’s independence in 1991.
“Ukraine will introduce a visa regime for citizens of the Russian Federation,” Zelensky said on his Telegram channel, adding that the requirement will come into effect on July 1.
Andriy Yermak, the president’s chief of staff, stressed that the country should strengthen its control over the entry of Russian citizens due to the “large-scale war” launched by Moscow. “Safety is the priority,” he said.
Besides the 2,300-kilometer border, the two countries share deep historical and cultural ties, and it’s not uncommon for people to have family members on both sides of the border.
