According to a senior general, the Ukrainian army has suffered heavy material losses since the start of the war with Russia. In an interview with an American magazine, the general in charge of the logistics of the ground forces admitted that in recent months almost 50% of the country’s military equipment has been lost in combat.
In an interview with the national press, Brigadier General Volodymyr Karpenko said, “To date, we have lost about 30% to 40% of the equipment, sometimes up to 50%, as a result of active combat. Thus, we lost about 50%.” said. Defense magazine was published on Wednesday the 15th.
Karpenko admitted that about 1,300 infantry fighting vehicles, 400 tanks and 700 artillery systems belonging to the Ukrainian Armed Forces were lost in the war. The general stressed that this is an estimate based on the frontline and intensity of the conflict.
In the interview, Karpenko reiterated her request for help to send more weapons to the country. “We’ve received a lot of weapon systems, but this has only met 10% to 15% of our demand,” he said. “The war we see now in Ukraine, the last time the world won evil, was in 1945.”
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, Ukraine has called for the deployment of weapons. A week ago, the country’s deputy military intelligence said that Ukrainian troops outnumbered artillery and relied almost exclusively on Western weapons to resist. The army would almost run out of ammunition at the front.
Some countries have already promised to help Ukraine. The US has recently promised to send high-tech medium-range missile systems. The launchers are part of a new US$700 million security aid package for Ukraine, which will include helicopters, Javelin anti-tank weapon systems, tactical vehicles, spare parts, among others.
Germany, France, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Canada, Poland and other countries have also supplied or are planning to send weapons to Ukraine.
Showdowns in Donbass
The front of the war is currently concentrated in the Donbass region. The situation is particularly dramatic in Sievierodonetsk, where the Russian army has bombed the Asot chemical plant, one of the city’s last points of resistance. According to Ukrainian sources, another 560 civilians, including 38 children, sought protection in the factory’s bunkers.
Russian officials on Saturday accused the Ukrainians of refusing to accept the ceasefire agreement and that no agreement had yet been reached to evacuate the factory.
The city of Sievierodonetsk is the last stronghold of the Ukrainian forces in Lugansk and the scene of the most active hostilities in recent weeks. In a maneuver similar to the one carried out in Mariupol, where the Ukrainian army took refuge in the Azovstal steelworks, the Ukrainian forces isolated themselves in this chemical factory and eventually fell, like the entire city, to Moscow’s power.
