The head of European Union diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said Russia was putting the world at risk of famine by blocking grain exports from Ukraine and imposing restrictions on its own shipments.
The “narrative war” with Russia over threats to food security and the reality of sanctions on Moscow will be at the center of the bloc’s foreign ministers meetings in Luxembourg on Monday (20).
“We stand ready to work with the UN to prevent the unintended impact of our sanctions on world food security,” Borrell wrote in an article published on his official blog. Said.
The head of European diplomacy denounced “Russia’s deliberate political choice to ‘militarize’ grain exports and use them as a blackmail tool against anyone who opposes their aggression” in Ukraine.
Borrell warned that “a world food disaster” could result if Ukraine’s ship exports are not resumed.
“Russia turned the Black Sea into a war zone, blocked the shipment of grain and fertilizer from Ukraine … and also imposed quotas and taxes on its own grain exports.”
According to him, the sanctions imposed by the bloc do not prohibit Russia from exporting grain unless persons or entities on the European negative list are involved in the operations.
We are fully aware that the sanctions are a ‘narrative war’ on this issue,” he added.
