The nine-day protests by Indigenous Ecuadorians against the government, which included a road blockade, put the country’s democracy at “serious risk” (21), Defense Minister Luis Lara, speaking for himself, said on Tuesday.
“The democracy of Ecuador is at serious risk from the coordinated action of passionate people that hinders the free movement of the majority of Ecuadorians,” said the Minister, along with the commanders of the Land, Navy and Air Forces.
Lara declared at the Defense Ministry headquarters in Quito that “the Armed Forces will not allow any attempt to disrupt the constitutional order or any action against democracy and republican laws.”
On Monday, thousands of locals arrived in the Ecuadorian capital as part of indefinite protests that began nine days ago against the conservative government of President Guillermo Lasso, where they are demanding cuts in fuel prices.
Indigenous peoples gathered by the opposition Confederation of Indigenous Peoples (Conaie), which participated in protests that overthrew three presidents between 1997 and 2005, blocked roads in most of the 24 provinces and clashed with security forces during demonstrations in many cities.
