the mask of the black phone (The Black Phone) is not just any mask. The movie’s villain costume that hits theaters this Thursday will be a buzzword and, if the film goes well, it will certainly be at every costume party for years to come.

The Sinister and Doctor Strange director’s project has all it takes to go well: it’s directed by a guy who guarantees good fears, has Ethan Hawke as the villain and most of those who saw him in his prime. projections confirm that it is a good experience for horror lovers.

The Black Telephone focuses on the nightmare story of a boy who is kidnapped by Albert, the psychopath wearing the mask, and locked up in a basement with a mattress and a supposedly destroyed black telephone. Throughout the film it will be seen that the mysterious object is used by the young man to communicate with the previous victims of the kidnapper.

Behind the mask is an expert. One of the two in charge of designing it is Tom Saviniknown for working on makeup and special effects for horror classics.

He participated in the greatest successes of the work of Giorgio A. Romero (the inventor of the zombies as we know them) and in the first film of the Friday the 13th saga starring the legendary killer Jason Voorhees.

The other designer who collaborated with him on The Black Telephone is his partner Jason Baker.

Savini and Baker’s work was for Callosum Studios and meant both of them returning to film, as they were working on making masks for catch wrestlers.

In The Black Telephone, Hawke’s character is seen wearing various masks. One, for example, has a fake nose and mouth, and the character complements it with big glasses, an old-fashioned black hat, and his creepy long hair. Another looks complete and with horns included and in a third image he is seen using it as if it were a mask.

It was nothing for the actor to use it. In dialogue with ECartelera, Hawke said he was taking her helped him in the interpretation.

“It was like doing a Greek tragedy. The body language, the vocalization … it’s something I had never done before and I didn’t know how to prepare. There is a certain feeling of freedom when you have your face covered which gives you a strange sense of power. It was something very special, “said the actor.

The rare origin of a symbol

There is no doubt that the hockey mask worn by Voorhees in the Friday the 13th saga is one of the most recognizable in the history of cinema.

Few remember, perhaps, that the first time the killer uses it is in the third film of the franchise, the first to be in 3D.

The why is completely arbitrary. It doesn’t hide so much history. Since the character required makeup and prosthetics because his face was disfigured, the film’s director wanted to try his luck with a mask.

For this he recalled that the 3D supervisor was an American hockey fan and that he had a Detroit Red Wings goalkeeper mask with him. He borrowed it, made the actor playing the villain wear it and then, seeing it, he thought it was the right one.

In fiction, Jason also chooses the mask out of sheer arbitrariness. During a murder raid, Voorhees “borrows” it from one of his victims and wears it simply to hide her face.
