The UK health surveillance agency on Tuesday recommended the monkeypox vaccine to people in the so-called “at-risk” group, defined by the agency as gay men who have multiple sexual partners and may be most affected by the disease.
“While anyone can contract monkeypox, available data suggest higher levels of transmission between (but not limited to) the sexual networks of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men,” UKHSA said in a statement.
Although monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease, the infection can occur through sexual intercourse.
British authorities recommend the Imvanex vaccine for men in the group considered by doctors to be at risk.
This relates to “those who have multiple partners, participate in group sex, or go to certain places where sexual intercourse takes place”.
With regular circulation in Central and West Africa, the virus is currently present in Europe, Australia, the Middle East and North and South America, with a total of more than 2,100 cases recorded between January 1 and June 15.
As of 16 June, the UK has reported 793 cases.
