US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he plans to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, as the US considers lifting some tariffs on Beijing in a bid to ease inflation.
“I plan to meet with President Xi. We haven’t decided when yet,” Biden told reporters. Over the weekend, Biden said a call would be made “soon.”
The most recent talks between the two leaders date back to March 18, when Biden warned Xi about the inconvenience of helping Russia invade Ukraine.
During President Donald Trump’s tenure, 25% tariffs were imposed on billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese exports.
The sanctions were aimed at punishing what the US saw as unfair Chinese trade practices and protecting American manufacturers.
The move was politically popular at the time, but as inflation hit 40-year highs in the United States, Biden is now trying to find ways to ease the pressure on prices and said he’s considering lowering tariffs.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yelen is among government officials who say easing tariffs could help control inflation.
A meeting between Biden and Xi was expected in the near future, in part because it will expire in July unless the Trump-era tariffs are renewed.
