US Attorney General Merrick Garland began an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Tuesday to discuss international efforts to investigate Russia’s war crimes on Ukrainian soil.

Garland met with Ukraine’s Attorney General Iryna Venicetova at the Krakovets crossing on the Polish border, according to a statement from the US Department of Justice.

In this context, Garland announced the establishment of the “War Crimes Liability Team”, led by Eli Rosenbaum, a senior Justice Department lawyer, to centralize and strengthen efforts to prosecute those responsible for crimes in Ukraine.
