Jair Bolsonaro’s government is trying to block the ratification of a resolution discussed at the UN this week by talking about women’s reproductive and sexual rights. At a meeting between governments negotiating the text in Geneva this Tuesday, the Brazilian delegation demanded that the project be modified to exclude terms.
The resolution, which will only be voted on at the UN Human Rights Council in July, aims to combat discrimination against women and, in one quote, refers to terms that do not please Brazil. But the government recognizes women’s access to sexual and reproductive health, but without mentioning the creation of a right.
The process of writing the final text is still at the consultation stage. However, if the practice in recent years continues in the Council, Brazil’s demand will hardly be answered.
Trying to explain the government’s stance, the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights said the report should put the question to Itamaraty. The Prime Ministry did not give an answer until the end of this pressure. The area remains open to disclosure by the authorities.
