Today, the city of Moscow has changed the official address of the US embassy to honor Ukraine’s pro-Russian separatists as a way to criticize Washington’s support for Kiev.
“The US Embassy has a new official address,” the Moscow City Hall said in a statement.
The diplomatic mission is now located at 1 People’s Republic Square in Donetsk, a tribute to one of the separatist areas in eastern Ukraine that Russia recognized as independent in February before attacking the neighboring country.
The city said the name change to the address was accepted after an online vote by Moscow authorities, attended by 278,684 people.
The move recalls a similar move adopted in the US in 2018, in which part of the street where the Russian embassy is located in Washington was renamed in honor of Russian dissident Boris Nemtsov, who was killed near the Kremlin in 2015.
