The Associated Press, one of the oldest and most respected international news agencies, announced this month the creation of an unusual position, “democracy editor,” and has chosen journalist Tom Verdin to fill the role.
The newly appointed journalist oversaw the 2021 review of US election fraud allegations and identified nearly 475 cases in the six states Trump questioned, a number that would make no difference to the 2020 results. and other media outlets to refute the former president’s lies about alleged widespread election fraud.
The agency pledged to “inject more resources to address challenges to democracy in the United States, including voting and access rights, election management, and the role of disinformation and propaganda.” AP editor-in-chief Julie Pace said in an interview with CNN that the current threats to democracy in the United States have caught the company’s attention.
The announcement came as a US House of Representatives committee was investigating the January 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol – an act that many saw as an attempted coup against democracy. The commission is encouraging voters to reverse the outcome of the 2020 election, won by Joe Biden, by promising to provide evidence that former President Donald Trump took part in the action.
The decision to establish this position comes in a year when the USA will hold important state elections and Trump’s influence will be remarkable by all indications.
The parallels with the situation in Brazil are unfortunately great. President Jair Bolsonaro is not only a huge fan of Trump, but also casts doubt on the outcome of the American election in 2020 and questions the Brazilian electoral system every day without providing any evidence.
Comparing the two, Folha noted in an editorial 12 days ago, “disregard for democratic rules, the scenario of preemptively contesting unfavorable election results, and incitement to institutional turmoil are inherent in the behavior of the Brazilian president.”
Defending democracy in 2022 is a big deal in Brazil. And it helps to understand why a “democracy editor” in different national media outlets might be useful.
to forget
There are still those who believe that closing the window is the best way to face a disturbing reality. The method, of course, does not work. And when enforced by a media outlet, it tends to undermine its credibility. That’s what happened this week with the news that, for the first time in history, a left-wing candidate has won and will become the president of Colombia. Gustavo Petro’s victory was a highlight in almost all Brazilian broadcasters. Only Record kept the matter in a 20-second note, not mentioning that the elected president was left-wing and his election had a historical character.
to remember
Still talking about the elections in Colombia, the result gave a special taste to a Brazilian journalist who bears the same name as the president-elect. Gustavo Petró from the G1 website received an invitation to attend the inauguration of Gustavo Petro. According to the journalist, he has been mistaken for a politician for at least 10 years when the Colombian won the mayoral election in Bogota. The eventual invitation to the presidency took place in 2021, when the Brazilian participated virtually in a Colombian TV show with his namesake. At that moment, Petro promised to invite him to the ceremony if he won the election.
