The US Supreme Court ruled on Thursday against a New York law that sought to limit the possession of weapons, finding it the law violated the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which protects the right to possess and carry firearms.
Judges’ decision is awaited (6-3) sets a precedent that leads to more people carrying guns legally on the streets of the nation’s largest cities, such as New York, Los Angeles and Boston, and elsewhere.
About a quarter of the US population lives in states that are expected to be affected by the ruling, the first major high court decision on guns in more than a decade.
