Two young men were arrested today in the Italian region of Trento for planning to carry out a terrorist attack in the country on behalf of ISIS, according to local police officials.
The man and woman, whose age or city of detention has not been disclosed, will be held to account – also internationally – for terrorism or unity for the purpose of overthrowing the democratic order, training and recruitment for the purpose of terrorism. According to official information, the man was placed under house arrest with an electronic anklet.
According to the investigations, the two teenagers, born in Italy, are children of Kosovar parents and have a normal social integration in the city where they live. However, both began to come into contact with radicalization materials online due to IS’s online propaganda.
They intended to launch an attack in the Trento area and then flee to Africa, from there they would set out to join the remnants of the terrorist group.
In addition to responding to the process, the two will have to go through a program of de-radicalisation. In Friday’s operation, police also confiscated computer equipment and chemicals that could be used to produce explosives.
The so-called “Kosovar cell” in Italy is considered the most active in terms of its ability to attract and advertise young foreigners to IS. Last year, a 19-year-old girl was arrested in Milan on the same charges.
