Indigenous protest in Ecuador: a crowd attacks a military convoy, kidnaps and injures soldiers

As part of a national strike called by indigenous in Ecuador, a mob attacked a military and police convoy near Quito trying to free private vehicles and food truckwith a balance of several in uniform wounded and kidnapped.

“Nearly 600 private vehicles and food trucks trapped in Nanegalito. The military and police tried to arrive this afternoon to free them. They did not arrive. In the middle of the world they were attacked. Dozens of wounded soldiers and five kidnapped” tweeted the Minister of Production, Julio José Prado.

In addition, another protester died on Thursday night wounded by the shot during clashes with police and military in the vicinity of the Assembly (parliament) in Quito, where about 100 injuries of various sizes were also reported. Previously, two deaths have been reported in other locations for various reasons.

In more than 11 days of conflict, there would be at least four people killed in the clashes.

On their Twitter account, the police also reported that their troops were shot and wounded.

Unemployment

Almost two weeks ago, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities called a national strike to demand that the government comply 10 pointsbetween them the reduction in the price of gasoline from $ 2.55 a gallon to $ 2.10, a larger budget for education and health, and supportive pricing for agricultural products.

The protests were marked by the almost permanent blockade of the main routes including the Pan-American, especially in the north-central sector of the country, where some of its largest cities suffer shortage of food, fuel and gas for domestic use.

Protesters in Quito have gathered since Thursday at the House of Culture and El Arbolito Park, very close to institutions such as the Assembly, the Procuratorate and the Procuratorate General, whose building was set on fire and its documents destroyed during the indigenous protests in 2019, when they demanded that the petrol subsidy not be partially eliminated.

Indigenous people also tried to take control of Parliament on Thursday after the government attempted to do so open the way to dialogue to resolve the wave of demonstrations.

Protesters advanced again on the Ecuadorian capital. At the front marched the women with their arms intertwined. Behind, thousands of indigenous people tried to break the uniformed picket guarding the National Assembly.

The policemen reacted with tear gas and stun grenades, while the protesters responded with homemade incendiary bombs, fireworks and stones.

In Quito, most of the marches are peaceful, but at night riots and clashes with the public force break out. Since Monday, about 10 thousand indigenous people who have come from their territories have been protesting in the capital, with three million inhabitants.
