Adeline Vining, a 36-year-old fashionista, said the Dior velvet dress had been in her possession for 25 years, but had previously remained in an attic for another four decades.
One woman was shocked after learning that a dress she had inherited from her late grandmother many years ago was worth a fortune.
Adeline Vining, a 36-year-old fashionista, said the Dior velvet dress was in his possession for 25 years and he was waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it. Before inheriting it, she had kept it in a suitcase in her grandfather’s attic for four decades, unused and collecting dust.
Not having had the chance to meet his charming grandmother, Adeline, who lives in London, in person, I was hoping to find out more about her through the dress. He had previously tried to contact Dior about 12 years ago, but said he didn’t get much help.
Adeline Vining said the Dior velvet dress helped her learn more about her grandmother’s story.
Now, with more determination, she turned to social networks in search of answers and found them on TikTok, where the dress immediately caught the attention of the fashion historian Henry Wilkinson.
Wilkinson told Adeline, that she shares “mostly clothes” on the network under her username @adelineviningthat the dress was probably one of Christian Dior’s earliest designs, judging by typography on the label.
He added: “The silhouette of the hourglass remembered it revolutionary ‘New Look’ which began in 1947. “Noting the distinctive zigzag embellishment, Wilkinson believed the strapless dress was the autumn winter 1949 collection by Christian Dior, back in the days when the iconic designer was still involved in the design process.
Through TikTok, Adeline Vining got in touch with a fashion historian who told her about the true value of her grandmother’s Dior dress.
One of these dresses had also previously been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, being a important piece of fashion history.
With the support of Wilkinson, Adeline decided to evaluate the dress and contacted the auction house Auctions of Kerry Taylor, based in London. She was “completely stunned” when the auctioneers valued her at around £ 35,000. approximately $ 45,000.
Adeline’s mother recently sent her a photo of her grandmother dancing wearing an unknown man and looking like she was “having a lot of fun”.

For Adeline, this was a “voyage of discovery”, as she didn’t know much about her grandmother, who sadly died when her mother was only two years old. She said: “I am happy that through her dress she can finally meet my grandmother. My grandfather worked in the foreign ministry, so my grandmother would have worn the dress for the events organized by my grandfather’s officeor events to which he was invited “.
“The dress has been in my grandfather’s attic for 40 years, then I’ve had it for 25 years. I kept it for so long because I’d always planned on wearing it. But it is so beautiful that it needs a very special occasion“.
