Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso said on Friday that the indigenous leader leading the protests – who they have already left four dead since they started two weeks ago – trying to give a coup d’etat and warned that it will use all legal tools to contain the violence.
“It is proved that the true intention of the violent is to generate a coup and that is why we ask the international community to warn against this attempt to destabilize democracy in Ecuador, ” Lasso told a radio and television network.
The president targeted the leader of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities, Leónidas Iza, who called for demonstrations. “Mr. Iza’s intention is to overthrow the government. Mr. Iza can no longer control the situation. The violence perpetrated by infiltrated criminals has gotten out of hand. ”
