Thousands of people took to the streets in dozens of American cities to protest the US Supreme Court’s decision that revoked the country’s legal right to abortion and put an end to nearly 50 years of understanding.

One of the biggest protests was recorded in front of the Supreme Court in the American capital, where thousands of women chanted “my body, my choice”.

Other demonstrations were held in New York, including two rallies in Union Square and Washington Square, Boston, Denver, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia.

A protest was also held in Austin, Texas, one of the states that already has a super-restrictive abortion law.

Police in Phoenix, Arizona, last Friday night used tear gas to disperse a pro-abortion crowd, CNN reports. According to agents, the protesters “repeatedly punched the glass door of the senate entrance”.

More demonstrations are scheduled for this weekend in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas, New Mexico and California. The string of protests in the US was sparked by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the historic 1973 Roe v Wade decision, which recognized the constitutional right to abortion and legalized it nationwide.

Now states can legislate as they wish. So far, seven US states led by Republicans have outlawed abortion soon after the Supreme Court’s decision. These are: A court in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Dakota, Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma has declared a blocked ban valid. Abortion bans will also come into effect in North Dakota and Utah.

It will take longer in Mississippi and Wyoming: The first will outlaw abortion 10 days after the attorney general declares the constitutional law, and the second will go into effect five days after the governor confirms the Supreme Court’s decision is overturned.

In Idaho, Tennessee, and Texas, it will last 30 days, although medical clinics in the second state have stopped offering abortions.

Today (25) US President Joe Biden reiterated that “the Supreme Court decision is devastating and painful”, but stressed that his administration will defend the “reproductive rights of American women.”

“A shocking and appalling decision,” Biden insisted during the signing ceremony of the bipartisan gun control bill.
