Ukraine asks G7 for more weapons and sanctions against Russia after Kyiv bombing

The Ukrainian government on Sunday demanded more weapons and sanctions from the G7 nations gathered at a summit in Germany following new Russian attacks in a neighborhood near the center of the capital, Kiev.

“The G7 summit should respond with more sanctions against Russia and more heavy weapons for Ukraine,” demanded “defeating sick Russian imperialism” on Twitter, Ukrainian diplomacy chief Dmytro Kuleba said.

Russia bombed a residential area in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, on Sunday, injuring at least four people. “A 7-year-old girl was sleeping peacefully in Kiev until a Russian cruise missile blew up her building,” Ukraine’s foreign minister said.

The Ukrainian capital has not recorded Russian attacks since the beginning of June, and a fire broke out on the top three floors of the building, according to AFP journalists present at the scene.

The mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitaly Klitschko, said the attack was a way to scare the Ukrainians (…), given the proximity of the NATO summit to be held in Madrid from Tuesday.

“At this week’s summits, it is extremely important that the G7 and NATO demonstrate that their commitment to the defense of Ukraine will never be weaker than the desire to defend Ukraine. The minister once again called for heavier weapons and tougher sanctions against “anyone who contributed to Putin’s war”. It also called for the suspension of Russian energy imports.
