G7 leaders gathered at a summit in southern Germany on Sunday mocked some shirtless photos of Russian President Vladimir Putin and joked about taking a similar photo.
“Coats? Jackets? Shall we take off our coats?” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked as he sat down at the table.
The leaders of the main western economic powers – the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom – meet for three days in Bavaria’s Elmau castle.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested they wait for the official photo before undressing, but Johnson continued the joke, saying, “We have to prove we’re tougher than Putin.”
“We’re going to have a bare-chested equestrian exhibit,” Trudeau said, referring to a shirtless photo of Putin on horseback in 2009. “It is best to ride a horse,” said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, without commenting on the clothing issue.
“We have to show them our boobs,” Johnson said.
Finally, the leaders posed in their coats for the photo shoot before the journalists left the room.
