Pope Francis appeared at the Vatican on Monday walking with the help of a cane and without a wheelchair which he had started using due to his right knee problems.

The pontiff slowly arrived at the Paul VI hall for an audience with the Neocatechumenal movement, but much safer that before undergoing knee injections to treat the pain he suffers and that prevent him from standing or walking for a long time.

Due to his health problems, the pope had already seen forced to cancel a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan scheduled for early July.

Francisco did not officiate the concluding Mass of the X Meeting of the Family this Saturday, and limited himself to reading the homily, but he was seen doing some first steps with the help of a cane.

After canceling the trip to Africa, the Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, stressed that the trip had been postponed because “the doctors believed that an excessive effort could induce him to return to the previous situation and not recover the advantages achieved so far”.

A few days ago, during the meeting with the Italian bishops, Francisco confessed to them that he did not want to be operated on and that he will continue with the infiltrations to cure his ailment, according to the newspaper The messenger.

While the Vatican confirmed last week the trip that Francis will make to Canada from 24 to 30 July.
