Ukraine: Russian bombardment of Lysychansk 8 dead, 21 injured

Severodonetsk was recently conquered by the Russian army. After weeks of devastating offensive to seize the Donbass region in the east of the country, the Russians completed their capture of the city on Saturday.

Lysychansk is the next target for Russian forces after weeks of fighting in the area that left dozens of civilians dead. This is the last major city in the Luhansk region captured by the Russians.

According to the mayor and district administration, Russian artillery struck Northern Saltivka, a residential area on the northeastern outskirts of the city. According to the authorities, the number of dead and injured may increase.

Russia has not yet made a statement regarding the allegations.

Ukraine also accused Russia today of attacking a shopping mall in Kremenchuk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram that more than 1,000 people were in the mall at the time of the attack.

He did not elaborate on the deaths, but said it was “impossible to imagine the number of victims”. “It is in vain to expect kindness and humanity from Russia,” he wrote.

Kyrylo Timochenko, vice-president of the Ukrainian presidential administration, said at least two people were killed and 20 injured, nine seriously. “Rescue operations are ongoing,” Timochenko also said on Telegram.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces shared Zelensky’s account on social media with a video in which the shopping center was engulfed in flames and thick dark smoke rose from the site. The publication says, “The occupiers fired rockets at the shopping center where there are more than a thousand civilians. The shopping center is on fire, the rescue teams are responding to the fire, it is impossible to imagine the number of dead.”
