BOGOTA (Reuters) – The Colombian prosecutor’s office will investigate the official response to the partial collapse of a grandstand at a bullfighting event on Sunday that killed at least four people and injured hundreds.
According to the videos, a section of three-story wooden bleachers fell forward in the arena where people were attending a bullfighting event promoted at the São Pedro and São João festivals.
“I jumped from the second floor and that’s how I broke my foot and the ankle of my right hand,” said Ulices Castro. “It was very tense, like a game of dominoes that unfolded until the whole structure collapsed.”
The injured question who designed and authorized the wooden structure and whether the boards used in the construction bear the weight of the spectators.
The prosecutor’s office, which is tasked with investigating misconduct by public authorities, announced on Twitter late Sunday that it would launch an investigation against the mayor of El Espinal, Juan Carlos Tamayo.
“The mayor did not respond to requests for action plans for disaster victims,” the prosecutor’s office said, without providing further details. The city did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Four people were killed in the crash, and Civil Defense official Luis Fernando Vélez told radio Monday that 280 injured had been treated.
