WASHINGTON, June 27, 2022 (AFP) — A Louisiana judge on Monday temporarily suspended laws banning abortion in this southern US state in a swift legal counterattack following the Supreme Court’s decision to revoke that right.

Medical students and other interested parties contested the three laws outlawing abortion in Louisiana in local jurisdictions, arguing that they were too “ambiguous” in failing to clearly state the exceptions and related sanctions.

Therefore, Judge Robin Giarrusso suspended these laws until the hearing on 8 July.

“Abortion may continue in Louisiana,” tweeted the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents the plaintiffs.

“Every extra day a clinic is open can make a difference in someone’s life,” President Nancy Northup said in a statement.

But that victory may be short-lived, as Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry pledges to “do everything in his power to ensure that laws protecting the unborn are enacted.”

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned case-law in the “Roe v. Wade” case, which guaranteed women’s right to terminate a pregnancy for 50 years and left it up to the states to decide whether to ban abortion.

Some conservative-run states rushed to ban abortion based on hitherto ineffective laws.

However, Democratic states such as California and New York have sought to be “sanctuaries” so that women who want to have an abortion can do so safely.
