Britain’s Chief of Staff, General Patrick Sanders, said in a statement today that Russia will pose an even greater threat to European security after the war in Ukraine, and therefore the British army must be prepared.
The general said Britain was having its “1937 moment”, referring to Adolf Hitler’s advance into Austria, a pre-WWII event that began in 1939.
“We are not at war, but we must act quickly so that we cannot contain territorial expansion,” he said in a speech at Royal United. Services instituteDepartment of Defense and Security.
Sanders, who became chief of staff this month, used his first speech to warn that the military must be prepared to fight to “avoid conflict” in what appears to be a call for modernization and possibly more defense spending.
He argued that the military should focus on increasing preparedness so that troops can be deployed quickly, as well as on urban conflicts and replenishing stocks.
We do not know how the war in Ukraine will end. But in most scenarios, Russia will be a greater threat to European security than before, after Ukraine. General Patrick Sanders.
“While Russia’s conventional capacity will be drastically reduced, at least for a period of time, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has recently announced his intention to restore historic Russian territory, which renders any rest temporary and exacerbates the threat.” said. Sanders.
