NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today on the first day of the bloc’s summit in Madrid that Ukraine is experiencing “a brutality not seen in Europe since the Second World War”.
Therefore, Stoltenberg said, “it is very important that we are willing to provide assistance”, assuring that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit will reach an agreement on a “new full aid package” to Ukraine.
According to Ukraine, Stoltenberg made these remarks a day after the bombing of a shopping center in Kremenchuk, in the country’s centre, which killed at least 18 people.
Another important topic of the Madrid meeting is the entry of Russia’s two neighbors Sweden and Finland into the Alliance, which was demanded after the invasion of Ukraine and faced opposition from Turkey, which sees the two countries as friends of Kurdish separatists.
Stoltenberg, who will try to remove the obstacle in the meeting with the three countries in question today, said, “We hope to make progress in the participation of Finland and Sweden.”
Pedro Sánchez, head of the Spanish government accompanying Stoltenberg, said he wanted to convey a message in the face of the war in Ukraine.
The aim of the summit is “to convey a message of unity among democracies that come together to defend democracy, the values that unite us are freedom, political pluralism, respect for human rights and freedom.” It is also the defense of a rules-based international order,” he said.
