Describing the Atlantic Alliance’s expansion into Finland and Sweden as “highly destabilizing”, the Russian deputy foreign minister said the summit in Madrid demonstrated NATO’s aggression towards Russia.
“The Madrid summit reinforces the bloc’s aggressive course towards Russia,” Deputy Minister Sergey Riabkov told Russian agencies.
The NATO secretary general said on Wednesday he views Russia as a “direct threat” to the security of the Western military coalition.
The Westerners decided to strengthen military resources because Russia attacked neighboring Ukraine, a candidate country to join NATO and the European Union, in February.
The attack prompted Finland and Sweden to apply for NATO membership, which had to be made at the Madrid meeting.
