Mexican journalist Antonio de la Cruz was shot dead this Wednesday (29) in Ciudad Victoria (Tamaulipas state), blaming the Expreso newspaper for which he works, bringing the total number of journalists killed in the country to 12 in 2022.

According to the news on the newspaper’s website, “Expreso newspaper reporter, journalist Antonio de la Cruz, was killed this morning. The first reports show that he was attacked in his home.”

According to the newspaper, the journalist’s daughter was injured in the attack, while local MP Gustavo Cárdenas, a friend of the journalist, told Milenio television that the victim’s wife was shot in the head.

De la Cruz has covered rural and climate-related issues, but on his Twitter account he denounced alleged acts of corruption by politicians.

“Faced with this new act of violence, the editorial group Expreso-La Razón demands that authorities at all levels deliver justice,” the newspaper said.

One of its journalists, Héctor González, was shot dead on 29 May 2018.

De la Cruz’s colleagues said they did not know if the journalist had received threats.

His final note was on the high temperatures recorded in Tamaulipas on Tuesday.

Reporters Without Borders said it “documented the facts” on its social networks.

According to RSF, around 150 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000. Most of the murderers went unpunished.

De la Cruz is the twelfth journalist killed in 2022 in Mexico, which is considered one of the most dangerous countries for communicators, according to counts by organizations advocating freedom of expression.

Prior to this latest crime, the Mexican government recorded nine murders with 26 detainees.

This year has been the bloodiest for the press, with 12 journalists killed in 2017.
